Unexplained Infertility

A couple is said to have unexplained infertility when they have gone through standard infertility workup and all the results are normal. In other words, there is no abnormality detected in both partners during their evaluation for infertility. This condition affects nearly 15% of couples with infertility. It is usually of serious concern to the affected couples as there is nothing specifically to target for treatment in both partners.

Treatment options

  1. Expectant observation with timed intercourse – This is a situation in which couples have intercourse around the time of ovulation, thus increasing the chances of fertilization. This may result in conception in up to 50% of cases.
  2. Ovarian stimulation – Though the woman is ovulating, stimulating the ovaries will increase the number of eggs available for fertilization and the chances of having at least one of the eggs fertilized becomes higher.
  3. Assisted reproductive technology – This may be the next option if the previous steps fail. IVF is the most reliable method of assisted reproductive technique for such couples. During this process, donor sperm, donor eggs or surrogacy may be attempted in order to bypass any subtle abnormality not detectable with the standard infertility investigations.
  4. Adoption – For some reasons, adoption may be the feasible option or the last resort if other methods have failed.
