Bloating after eating is normally caused by having a lot of gas in your digestive tract. It is a situation where your stomach feels so full and uncomfortable. It is usually advised that you see a GP or general practitioner doctor (a medical doctor who provides general care to patients of all ages.), if you experience belly bloating a lot or it refuses to stop.

Symptoms of Bloating after eating

Listed below are some of the symptoms of bloating people experience:

  1. Pain or discomfort in the stomach
  2. Stomach feels much bigger and full that usual
  3. Farting more than usual
  4. Some rumbling or noise making in the stomach

What causes Bloating after eating?

  1. Having a lot of gas in your gut. This can be caused by some food and drinks, such as some vegetables and carbonated drinks, or by swallowing air when you eat.
  2. It can also be caused by a problem with your digestion, such as: constipation, a food intolerance, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  3. Some people feel bloated around the time of their period.
  4. Sometimes, bloating that does not go away can be a sign of something more serious such as ovarian cancer.

How to reduce bloating

  1. Exercise regularly to improve your digestion and help prevent bloating – exercise can also help when you're feeling bloated.
  2. Chew with your mouth closed to avoid swallowing air.
  3. Drink plenty of water.
  4. Eat foods high in fibre if constipated.
  5. Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large meals.
  6. Massage your stomach from right to left to release trapped wind.
  7. Do not drink lots of fizzy drinks, alcohol or caffeine in coffee and tea.
  8. Do not eat lots of foods that are known to cause gas, like cabbage, beans or lentils.
  9. Do not eat large meals late at night before bed, or slouch when eating.
  10. Do not eat lots of processed, sugary, spicy or fatty foods.
  11. Do not eat food you are intolerant to, if you have a food intolerance.
